Drawing flak over errors in textbooks issued by government of Karnataka, the authorities have shifted into damage-control mode. The department of primary and secondary education decided to come out with a corrigendum to the errors and recall the textbooks that had missing pages or pages from other subjects.
Besides factual and grammatical errors in textbooks, several educational blocks reported subjects being swapped in some textbooks. While Kannada textbooks had pages
from the mathematics textbook, mathematics books contained pages from social science. This triggered panic and confusion among kids and teachers alike.
Realising the mistake, the government has now decided to recall those books. The department said students that received textbooks with mistakes will be provided with new textbooks while printers and publishers responsible for such embarrassing gaffes will be dealt with severely.
Speaking to Bangalore Mirror, minister of primary and secondary education, Tanveer Sait, said, “In case of factual and grammatical errors, we will issue a list of errors to the schools for distribution among students. In cases were textbooks for one subject contained pages from other subjects, such books will be recalled and replaced with new books.”
Attributing the mistake to negligence of publishers and printers, Tanveer Sait said, “In several cases, different subjects have been mixed and bunched together. In Kannada books, mathematics pages have been added, similarly, mathematics books had pages from social science. The error originated with printers who were given orders to print textbooks of two subjects. Publishers will be held responsible for such mistakes and we will initiate strict action against them in the coming days.”
