Birla Institute of Technology & Science (shortened BITS or BITS, Pilani) is an Indian institute of higher education and a deemed university.
The university has 15 academic departments and focuses primarily on undergraduate education in engineering and the sciences and on its management programme.

The institute was established in its present form in 1964. During this period, the institute's transformation from a regional engineering college to a national university was backed by G.D. Birla. BITS has established centres at Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad and Dubai.
BITS administers the all-India computerised competitive entrance examination, BITSAT (BITS Admission Test), Admission is merit-based, as assessed by the BITSAT examination. The fully residential institute is privately supported.
BITSAT is an admission test conducted for Bachelor’s level and Masters’ level engineering as well as pharmacy courses by the prestigious Birla Institute of Science and Technology. The examination is taken for admission to their renowned group of colleges. This is a purely merit-based examination and has 0% reservation. The admission is provided based on the merit list only.
Candidates can apply for this exam in the month of January. This examination takes place in May and enables candidates to seek admissions for Bachelors’ programs in the three colleges managed by Birla Institute of Technology and science.
There are 2000 seats available for which lakhs of students appear year after year. The candidates who satisfy the eligibility criteria (That is, passing with a minimum of 75% in 10+2 board exams) can apply for the computer based online examination of BITSAT. The result is followed by the counselling sessions for the candidates.
Toppers from all the Education Boards are not required to take up the examination and they are given direct admissions to any of the BITS campuses.
