Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar on Sunday inaugurated the long-awaited Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dharwad in Karnataka.
“I assure that the IIT in Dharwad will become a model for other IITs in the country," Javadekar said.
The institute which had started functioning from August 1, will be mentored by IIT-Bombay for the next three years.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Union Minister Anantha Kumar were also present for the inaguration.
On IIT-Dharwad, which is the 23rd IIT, Mr. Javadekar said the Government would help create a permanent campus faster than expected. He assured Karnataka that its demand for additional Kendriya Vidyalaya and Jawahar Navodaya schools in Hubballi-Dharwad would be considered. Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayaraddi demanded 25 per cent regional quota for students of host states in IITs. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the State had provided 470 acres for IIT-Dharwad free. He said the State government would welcome all Central initiatives to promote higher education and offered to provide sufficient land free. Land would be provided at Hubballi-Dharwad if the Centre sanctions more Kendriya Vidyalaya and Jawahar Navodaya schools.
