magine students made to sit in classrooms measuring 360 sqft or asked to study in a reading room with space as little as 120 sqft! These were the conditions of a number of colleges in the state and students were forced to study in poor conditions. However, probably for the first time, the PU
department has withdrawn recognition to 13 colleges citing poor infrastructure.
The department took the step after a direction from the HC, which in its order dated January 28, had asked the PU Department to inspect colleges all over the state to find if they complied with rules. The department was asked to issue notices to colleges that did not follow norms, give them an opportunity of
hearing and take necessary action in accordance with the law.
Three city colleges — Vijaya Chetana PU College in JP Nagar, Nagarbavi and Padmanabha Nagar — are among the colleges that are in the dock. In a circular, PU director Sushma Godbole said that following the HC directive, a team of deputy directors of public instruction visited the colleges. The team reported lack of infrastructure in 13 colleges.
Based on this report, a show-cause notice was issued to the colleges and based on their responses, the PU Department had decided to withdraw their recognition. According to this report, the guidelines needed to be followed by colleges were — land measuring 25,000 square feet, building, playground, classrooms measuring 22*30 (660 sqft), library (1,000 sqft), reading room (1,000 sqft) and laboratory (1,440 sqft). The colleges mentioned in the repot, didn't have playgrounds or operated out of rented buildings. The classrooms, libraries and reading rooms were much smaller than the prescribed dimensions.
