
A good SSLC score has many advantages. From this year, there is a discount in PU fees in some colleges. To get good students, these colleges are offering discounts. A student who scores 90% marks can pay between Rs 20,000 and Rs 30,000 less than one with a first class.
The trend, so far in vogue in Tier 2 cities, has come to Bangalore. The offers are in terms of scholarships, fee waivers and discounts. For example, if you score 90% or more and choose commerce, Shree Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain College promises you a scholarship. It's as high as Rs 18,000 for students with 95%, Rs 15,000 for students with 92%, and Rs 12,000 for those who score more than 90%.
In Adarsh PU College, the difference in fee varies from Rs 5,000 to Rs 32,000 for a single course. Vivekananda PU College offers to pay the admission fee for students with 90%. In MS Ramaiah PU College, there is a discount of Rs 15,000 for bright students.
"Students with distinction need not even wait for the merit list. We'll offer them instant admission," says principal M Kempegowda.
"We have come up with scholarships to attract good students. We offer them to students who have done well in sports or arts as well," says BT Venkatesh, director, PU programme, SBM Jain College.
Students in Tier 2 cities have benefited a lot. "The less your marks, the more you cough up. I was asked %to pay Rs 56,000 for I PU. If I had %scored more than 75%, the college told me I could have paid Rs 16,000 less," said a student who got admission to a PU college in Mysore.
Fees in Tier 2 cities have gone up drastically this year. Dakshin Kannada, which has always been the topper in results, has the most sought-after PU colleges in the state. They charge anywhere between Rs 25,000 and Rs 2 lakh in annual fees. Even colleges in suburban towns like Puttur charge annual fees around Rs 25,000.
The fee in private unaided colleges is around Rs 60,000 per annum for I PUC and Rs 65,000 per annum for II PUC in Dharwad and Hubli. This includes tuition fees and other regular fees plus extra coaching for CET/JEE and other entrance tests. The fee was Rs 50000 - Rs 55000 last year. The fee increase in Bangalore colleges is marginal.
