Bangalore University will award doctoral degrees to 223 students at its 49th convocation on Tuesday.
Vice chancellor Prof B Thimme Gowda said on Monday that this was the highest number of PhDs being awarded in the history of the university. Last year, the number was 168.
“With doctorates playing a significant role in career promotions, more students are taking up research these days,” Gowda said.
Of a total of 51,130 eligible students, 33,674 undergraduate and postgraduate students have applied for the convocation. Of these, 846 candidates have passed with distinction, 31,838 bagged first class, 14,322 second class and 4,124 pass class.
Two top students of University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) students have attributed their success to teachers at the varsity. Mohitha S M, who completed her bachelor’s in Civil Engineering, topped the branch with 88 per cent marks. She will be awarded five gold medals and five cash prizes.
“Teaching in my college was simply superb as the teachers were very supportive. They used to even lend us books when we expressed interest in knowing more,” said the medallist.
She presently works in the Public Works Department and plans to pursue higher education.
Sowmya P Rao, who completed BE in Mechanical Engineering, topped her branch with an aggregate score of 84 per cent. She too will be awarded five medals and two cash prizes.
For her, the fact that the university did not have a prescribed syllabus worked to her advantage. “Bangalore University does not have a prescribed syllabus.
This was very useful as there was no spoon-feeding. We referred all the relevant books. Group studies too helped us a lot,” Sowmya said. She is currently employed with Volvo Group Truck Technologies for which she was selected through campus placement. Though she is interested in higher education, she believes that the hands-on experience which her workplace offers would help her gain better knowledge in the field.
